Ayurveda for You
According to Ayurveda each of us has a unique mix of three mind and body principles, which creates our specific mental and physical characteristics (prakruti/constitution). These are:
- Air and Ether (vata dosha)
- Fire and Water (pitta dosha)
- Water and Earth (kapha dosha)
These three doshas allow all the organs of the body to work together in harmony. They also create your relationship with the environment and universe (cosmos). We usually have strong features of one dosha but the others also influence us. Our health is directly dependent on the correct balance of all three. Ayurvedic therapies & nutrition treats the whole person, body mind and spirit, while balancing the doshas or the individual’s energy patterns. It also adopts an array of natural methods including, massage, herbal medication and nutrition to prevent imbalance in our bodies and maintain well-being.
Massage is particularly important in Ayurveda, the rhythmic motion of massage releases joints and relaxes muscles for greater freedom of movement. It increases blood circulation and encourages the elimination of metabolic wastes. There is significant relief from anxiety, fatigue, circulatory disorders, backaches, injuries and many other disorders. Nutrition Agni, ojas and ama
Notable importance is placed on Ayurvedic nutrition and lifestyle. Paying attention to our unique constitution and daily routine we can maintain good health.
Agni or the “digestive fire,” is one of the most important principles of Ayurveda. It refers broadly to our ability to process all aspects of life, including food, experiences, memories, and sensory impressions. Agni is responsible for absorbing the nutrients and essential elements the body needs while burning off waste products.
If our agni is strong, we’re able to digest food effectively and easily assimilate our daily experiences. On the other hand, if agni is weak, our body is unable to digest well, creating toxic residue or ama that lodges deep in our cells.
According to Ayurveda, strong agni leads to excellent health and well-being, while the accumulation of ama results in the slow deterioration of the body and ultimately, disease.
Signs of ama: Bad breath, coated tongue, dull appetite, delicate digestion, sluggish or irritable elimination, generalized pain, fatigue, depression, susceptibility to infections.
If good agni is maintained this in turn enhances our ojas or immunity.
To ensure balance and good health, it’s crucial to eliminate the ama stored in our body and focus on producing good quality ojas, essential for immunity and energy.
Ojas is the pure and subtle substance that’s extracted from food that has been completely digested. Ojas circulates throughout the bodily tissues and heart, sustaining the physical self, bringing clarity to the mind and balancing the emotions.
To promote the flow of ojas, we need a good diet focused on good quality foods. The body can easily digest pure foods and extract essential energy. Such foods include organic milk, almonds, rice, and fruits. It’s not necessary to eat these foods exclusively, just to include them in your diet on a regular basis.
Some foods are difficult if not impossible for the body to convert into ojas, including meat, poultry, fish, oily foods, cheese, leftovers, processed food, and items with an excessively of sour or salty tastes. Canned, frozen, or reheated food will not produce as much ojas opposed to freshly prepared meals. Consumption of alcohol and smoking cigarettes destroys ojas.
